An architectural project from the Lebanese University ranks among the best international projects for designing a sustainable elementary school in Senegal

The project of Professor Khaled Mahmoud Abou Taam and his architectural team from the Faculty of Fine Arts & Architecture (Branch 4) ranked among the best final projects on 22 December 2020 in the global architectural competition “SENEGAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - SAMBOU TOURA DRAME” launched by “www.archstorming.com” for human architecture competitions in cooperation with the UK charity organization “Let's Build My School” (LBMS) to build schools in developing countries.

The challenge of the competition is to design a sustainable elementary school and create innovative and affordable building technologies in the construction process, in addition to inspiring residents to use the same technologies proposed to build their own homes.

Professor Abou Taam's team, composed of graduates of the Faculty of Fine Arts & Architecture, Ali Al-Affi and Catherine Zalzali, and the graduate of Kharkov University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Ekaterina Abou Taam, adopted an architectural concept based on the design of two regular wings linked to a protected open courtyard shaded by a large tree (Moraceae) with a library and dining area with a dynamic free design that mimics the movement of children during their breaks. The team used local and sustainable materials and technologies that were innovative, affordable and easy to build.

It is reported that Professor Abou Taam's team ranked third in the International Architectural Contest “House Challenge 2019 - Desert House”, and second in the “Triumph Architectural Treehouse Awards 2015”. His project "Energy Pavilion" in the London Art Museum park, was also included in the honor list of distinguished projects in the International Architectural Contest “Triumph Pavilion 2016 - Energy Pavilion”.
