"Ascending from Under the Rubble" for the student Merheb Merheb from the Lebanese University wins “Beirut Blast Masterpiece Contest Art”
Student Merheb Merheb, from the Lebanese University ranked first in the contest organized by the Lebanese Transparency Association (LTA) to select “Beirut Blast Masterpiece”.
Merheb from the Faculty of Fine Arts & Architecture (Branch 3 - Master of Fine Arts), presented an art work consisting of a sculpture made of nails and gypsum entitled “Ascending from Under the Flood”.
Merheb explained his artistic work, which was carried out under the supervision of Bassam Kirillos, Faculty professor saying: “This work represents Beirut and its people who lost their homes in the bloody explosion. The hologram embodies a woman and underneath it a baby emerging from among the rubble with difficulty and pain, and represents the harsh scene of people homeless or displaced.
According to the final result of the contest issued on 14 December 2020, the work of Merheb won 2,444 votes on LTA website.
Merheb previously won “Bnachi Prize for Painting” in 2016 and 2019, and represented the Lebanese University students in Morocco at the Schools of Art in the Mediterranean in 2018, and was recently chosen by the World Antiquities Organization, the British Council and the Ministry of Culture in Lebanon to be part of the training program on restoration and sculpture in Lebanon.
