The Faculty of Agronomy organized national workshop on pastoral systems in Lebanon
The Faculty of Agronomy organized a national workshop on "Pastoral Systems in Lebanon - Between Scientific Research and Policy Making", under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture Dr. Nizar Hani and in the presence of President Bassam Badran, Dean of the Faculty of Agronomy, Dr. Nadine Nassif, FAO representative Dr. Veronica Quattrola, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Engineer Louis Lahoud, in addition to diplomatic, security, scientific and union figures and a group of professors and students.
The workshop began with a speech by Dean Nassif, in which she referred to the conclusion of the project “Innovative Models for a Sustainable Future of Mediterranean Pastoral Systems (Pastinnova)", funded by the European Commission under the Prima program for 2021, and the launch of pivotal prospects represented by the proposal of new policies for pastoral systems in Lebanon.
Dean Nassif spoke about Pastinnova project, which aims to enhance the sustainability, profitability, and resilience of pastoral farms by developing innovations and commercial and organizational models to maximize their potential and facilitate their access to markets.
Dr. Veronica Quattrola, representative of FAO, delivered a speech in which she highlighted the importance of Pastinnova project at the national and European levels, emphasizing the need to exchange experiences between professors at the Faculty of Agronomy and researchers from FAO, in collaboration with several countries, to work on strengthening the protection of critical pastoral areas.
The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Louis Lahoud, also delivered a speech in which he stressed the importance of joint cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Faculty of Agronomy at the Lebanese University and private universities. He also praised the pivotal role of the Ministry in protecting the forest pastoral sector and its importance in preserving livestock.
President Bassam Badran spoke about the project, noting that it reflects the university's 2024-2028 strategy, which emphasizes that the academic role goes beyond education to include a leading role in driving change and building a better future.
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Nizar Hani highlighted the importance of the workshop's topic, which touches on the essence of the relationship between humans and nature, noting that grazing is the first line of defense in reducing flammable biomass and helps create what are known as “firebreaks” that separate human activities from forests.
