The Ministry of Education and the Lebanese University mourn the passing of Dr. Hussein Bazzi and Dr. Mortada Srour
The Ministry of Education & Higher Education and the Lebanese University mourn the Director of the Faculty of Science – Branch 1, Dr. Hussein Bazzi, and Dr. Mortada Srour, who were martyred as a result of the Israeli attack that targeted the Rafik Hariri University Campus - Hadath while they were performing their academic duties.
Targeting educational and university institutions constitutes a flagrant attack on the mission of science, on the collective intellect and memory of nations, and an attempt to extinguish the light of knowledge that universities bring to society.
The Ministry and the Lebanese University consider this attack to constitute a full-fledged war crime, as international humanitarian law clearly stipulates the protection of educational and cultural institutions and prohibits attacks against them under any circumstances.
Accordingly, the Ministry and the Lebanese University call on international and UN bodies to assume their responsibilities and take urgent action to protect educational institutions, preserve the sanctity of the university campus, and keep education out of the circle of targeting and violence.
While the Ministry and the Lebanese University extend their deepest condolences to the families of the two martyrs, their colleagues, and their students, they affirm that the resolve of the university’s academic community—comprising professors, students, and staff—will remain steadfast in the face of all attempts at oppression and destruction.
