The Lebanese University achieves a progress in the Arab world in the QS ranking classification

The Lebanese University advanced four ranks in the Arab University Rankings issued by the International “QS - Quacquarelli Symonds” institution, to become among the top 21 Arab universities in 2021 after ranking among the top 25 in the 2020 ranking.

QS, a global British institution specializing in the classification of universities, relied on a set of positive indicators to establish the new classification of the Lebanese University, most notably the higher education level of its professors, its good academic reputation and its professional reputation in the labor market and among employers, in addition to its wide web presence.

The Lebanese University made tangible progress in the aforementioned indicators compared to last year's figures, noting that the classification was based on only two years of data.

QS noted a decline in the Arab ranking detailed points for the Lebanese University in terms of faculty/student ratio and proportion of international faculty.

In this context, it is important for the Lebanese University to clarify to the public opinion that the policy of limiting employment, which was followed for various reasons, including those related to the University budget, prevents the employment of more professors. Therefore, it is normal that the faculty/student ratio is affected.

Regarding the proportion of international faculty, it is known that the emergence of the Coronavirus at the end of 2019 shuffled cards around the world, and led to a change in academic agendas, to cease activities and cancel university visits, especially with the disruption of air navigation at international airports, and some of these visits transformed into virtual meetings, when needed.

For the first time in its history, the Lebanese University had applied to the QS list, whose results were released in June 2020, and was able to reserve an advanced rank among international universities (701/750) out of more than 1,600 universities, despite being classified according to only one year of data out of five years, unlike universities that participate in the classification since several years.

The QS classification is considered among the three most important global university rankings, and is based on several metrics mainly related to:

  • Academic reputation
  • Employer reputation
  • Faculty/student ratio
  • Proportion of staff with a PhD
  • Citations per paper
  • Papers per faculty
  • International Research Network
  • Proportion of international faculty
  • Proportion of international students
  • Web impact
