In order to raise the level of foreign language education at the Lebanese University and to facilitate the pursuit of studies for students in all majors, and in accordance with the LMD system that notes the importance of foreign languages (French & English) and the need to master them to reach the required level as a condition for obtaining a degree in all majors, a funding agreement was signed between the Government of France and the Government of the Lebanese Republic to implement project No. 04-2004 (“Fund for Priority Solidarity”) signed on 1/8/2005, which aims to support the reform of French language education and French-language teaching at the Lebanese University.
Therefore, the university presidency focuses on:
- Mandatory implementation of a mechanism for teaching foreign languages.
- Requesting all faculties and branches to coordinate with the Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of Foreign Languages at the Lebanese University located in the Central Administration (Dr. Nada Majzoub - phone number: 01/612171).
- Submitting a letter to the university presidency about the need of each faculty for an intensive course to improve the linguistic level of students no later than May of each academic year.
- Facilitating the tasks of this committee in terms of directly contacting the concerned professors in all faculties and branches to invite them to the academic meetings and mandatory training courses assigned to them.
- Requesting each faculty to provide the Language Coordination Office with a list of the names of professors who teach French and English.
Three foreign language centers have been established in Greater Beirut and are in the process of being equipped (University Campus, Branch 2 of the Faculty of Science - Fanar and Branch 1 of the Faculty of Pedagogy - UNESCO), pending the establishment and equipping of centers in the governorates to teach foreign languages according to the newly adopted principles appropriate to the needs of all majors and disciplines.
