Decision No. 2646 Internal Regulations of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Lebanese University

Chapter 1: Mission and objectives of the faculty

 

Article 1

 

The mission of the faculty is to open up the field of scientific and cognitive acquisition to all students enrolled in it, to provide them with specialized training and to equip them with the experience and scientific, methodological, and technical foundations necessary to assume leadership responsibilities in the creation and management of pharmaceutical institutions in the public and private sectors. It also consists of contributing to the overall and integrated development of Lebanese society, strengthening its cultural openness, and expanding the areas of scientific and cultural cooperation between Lebanon and other countries.

 

Article 2

 

The faculty strives to strengthen its national role in the field of health and medicine by achieving the following objectives:

1. Cooperating and consulting with public and private administrations, institutions, and organizations in order to adapt the education provided by the faculty to the real needs of the labor market and the evolution of these needs, and to guarantee employment opportunities for graduates.

2. Conducting theoretical and practical research in the fields of health, pharmacy, and medicine, encouraging and supporting faculty members and graduate students to conduct and publish such research, and providing everything necessary to carry it out.

3. Organizing scientific symposiums and conferences in the faculty's areas of expertise and participating in conferences organized by other parties.

4. Provide scientific services and advice and field studies to public and private administrations and institutions, in accordance with the regulations in force.

5. Organize training courses for the public and private sectors in the faculty's areas of expertise in order to contribute to improving pharmaceutical performance and the quality of medicines.

6. Develop cooperation with universities and pharmacy faculties in Lebanon and abroad, as well as with international and French-speaking organizations in the fields of scientific research and joint theses, and obtain scholarships for students and professors.

 

Chapter 2: Degree system, specializations, and sections

 

Article 3

 

The faculty offers the following specialization: pharmacy

The faculty council is authorized to propose the addition of new specializations in accordance with the regulations in force.

 

Article 4

 

The faculty awards its students:

- a doctorate in pharmacy, which takes at least five years to complete, including the preparatory year, and no more than seven years

- a professional master's degree, which takes at least two years to complete and no more than four years in the following fields:

* Industrial cosmetology

* Clinical pharmacy.

 

Article 5

 

The faculty prepares its students, in coordination with the relevant higher doctoral institute, to obtain a research master's degree in the specialties determined by the university council in accordance with the regulations in force.

 

Article 6

The doctoral program in pharmacy includes:

a) an internship period in the field of specialization lasting at least 12 months during the course of study.

b) The Doctor of Pharmacy degree is awarded on the basis of a thesis prepared by the student and equivalent to 9 credits.

 

Article 7

 

The professional master's program includes an internship period in the field of specialization lasting a minimum of four months, culminating in a thesis prepared by the student. The internship period and thesis are equivalent to 30 credits.

 

Article 8

 

The President of the university appoints a committee to examine the doctoral thesis in pharmacy and the professional master's thesis on the proposal of the dean, on the recommendation of the faculty council.

 

Article 9

 

The faculty shall define, in consultation with the institutions concerned by the training referred to in Articles 6 and 7, the content of this training and the tasks of the supervising professor and the person responsible for the training process in the institutions.

 

Article 10

 

The faculty comprises the following academic departments:

1. Department of Chemistry (Chemistry)

2. Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmacy Practice (Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmacy Practice)

3. Department of Pharmacology (Pharmacology)

4. Department of Medical Biology (Medical Biology)

5. Department of Pharmacology and Life Sciences (Pharmacognosy and Human and Animal Biology)

6. Department of Clinical Pharmacogenomics and Pathology (Clinical Pharmacognosy and Pathology)

 

Chapter 3: Student admission and registration system

 

Article 11

 

To be admitted to the Doctor of Pharmacy program, students must meet the following requirements:

1. Hold a Lebanese high school diploma or an officially equivalent diploma.

2.

A. Have completed all first-year courses at the Faculty of Pharmacy or the Faculty of Sciences of the Lebanese University with an average grade of 12/20.

B. Or have successfully completed all first-year courses at a faculty of pharmacy outside the Lebanese University with a minimum grade of “good.”

3. Pass the entrance exam organized by decision of the university council on the recommendation of the faculty council, which sets the number of students who may be admitted after the exam.

 

Article 12

 

The above-mentioned entrance exam includes the following written tests:

Article 13

 

The admission requirements for students and the subjects covered in the entrance examination may be modified by decision of the university council on the recommendation of the faculty council.

 

Article 14

 

Any candidate who has obtained an average of at least 12/20 in all the tests is considered to have passed the exam. Any mark lower than 20/5 in the entrance exam subjects is considered invalid.

 

Article 15

 

Admitted students are accepted in order of their total exam mark and within the limit of the number indicated in Article 11.

 

Article 16

 

Candidates whose admission has been accepted must complete the registration process within ten days of the date of posting of their admission on the faculty notice board, failing which they will lose their right of admission and be replaced by another candidate according to the above-mentioned ranking.

 

Article 17

 

New students enrolled in the faculty are required to take a foreign language test organized by the Foreign Languages Office of the Lebanese University, in coordination with the faculty.

 

Article 18

 

Any student who obtains a score lower than 10/20 in the foreign language exam is required to take an intensive course in that language and to take an exam at the end of the course, the passing of which is a prerequisite for academic registration in foreign language courses approved in the faculty's programs.

 

Article 19

 

Students admitted to prepare for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree who have studied at the Faculty of Sciences of the Lebanese University or in the faculties of pharmacy of other universities may request recognition of certain courses they have already taken. To this end, the special equivalence system that defines the conditions for recognition of credits obtained outside the faculty and which is published by decision of the dean shall be applied, provided that it does not contradict the general equivalence system of the Lebanese University and that the total credits of the equivalent courses do not exceed 60 (sixty credits according to the Lebanese University credit system).

 

Article 20

 

To be admitted to the Faculty of Pharmacy to prepare for a professional master's degree, students must meet the following conditions:

1. Have completed all four years of courses, including the first year, in accordance with the programs approved by the faculty, with a cumulative average of at least 3/5 according to the grading scale approved by the Lebanese University (or 12/20 according to the system currently in force).

2. Students are selected from among the admitted candidates based on their cumulative grade point average over the four years, including the first year, and within the limit of the number of places available for the master's degree.

3. Students admitted in accordance with the previous paragraph may be exempted from the first year of the master's degree or from certain courses upon the recommendation of the faculty council and with the approval of the university council, after fulfilling the specific requirements for the master's degree.

 

Article 21

 

The faculty has the right to accept, for the preparation of a professional master's degree, students who have graduated from other universities, up to a limit of 10% of the total number of admissions, under the following conditions:

1. Hold a degree in pharmacy from a recognized university, the equivalence of which has been established in accordance with the rules in force

2. Have obtained at least a “good” grade on the degree

3. Meet the student evaluation conditions (competitive examination, file review, examination, etc.) approved by the university council on the recommendation of the faculty council

4. If the required number of students from the Lebanese University is not reached for the master's degree, the faculty may supplement the number of students with graduates from other universities.

 

Article 22

 

Students admitted to a professional master's degree who have studied in pharmacy faculties at other universities may request recognition of certain courses they have already taken. To this end, the special equivalence system that defines the conditions for the recognition of credits obtained outside the faculty and which is published by decision of the dean shall be applied, provided that it does not contradict the general equivalence system of the Lebanese University and that the total credits of the equivalent courses do not exceed 40 credits, in accordance with the credit system of the Lebanese University.

 

Chapter 4: Registration and Attendance System

 

Article 23

 

Students must complete their academic registration at least one week before the start of the semester and may seek the assistance of approved academic advisors for this purpose.

 

Article 24

 

Students have the right to review their academic registration for a maximum period of one week before the start of the semester. They may also cancel their registration for certain courses for a maximum period of one month before the start of the semester.

 

Article 25

 

If students fail one or more courses at the end of the first semester exams, only the continuous assessment mark for these courses will be carried over to the second semester. If they do not sit the second semester exams, they will not be eligible for the semester course compensation system.

 

Article 26

 

A. Attendance is compulsory in all lectures and tutorials, provided that the student's attendance rate in the course is not less than 80% of the number of hours allocated to them.

B. Attendance is compulsory for 100% of the hours allocated to all practical classes, and absence from these classes is not accepted.

c. Anyone who violates the provisions of paragraphs a) or b) above will be prohibited from taking the final exam, unless they present a valid excuse and compelling reasons approved by the faculty council.

 

Chapter 5: Assessment and Examination System

 

Article 27

 

The final grade for the course is divided between continuous assessment and the final exam, depending on the nature of the course, as follows:

Article 28

 

Continuous assessment uses various evaluation methods, such as written tests, partial exams, reports and research papers, as well as practical work, provided that the number of activities subject to continuous assessment is not less than two per semester for each course.

 

Article 29

 

The continuous assessment grade is composed of the sum of the midterm exam grade, the student participation assessment grade, and the practical work grade, as follows:

Article 30

 

If a student does not attend the midterm exam for compelling reasons or circumstances of force majeure, such as the death of a relative, hospitalization, etc., approved by the faculty council, the midterm exam grade will be added to the final exam grade.

 

Article 31

 

The grade of a student who does not take the final written exam for the first session of a course, regardless of their excuses and reasons, is considered invalid. However, if they do not take this exam during the second session due to force majeure or exceptional circumstances, such as the death of a relative or hospitalization, they may take a make-up exam upon the decision of the university president, based on a recommendation from the faculty council.

 

Article 32

 

If the student misses the midterm and final exams of the first session of a course, they are not entitled to take the second session of that course, except in the case of illness requiring an interruption of studies for more than two months, upon decision of the faculty council.

 

Article 33

 

A student who is more than 15 minutes late is not allowed to enter the examination room, and no student is allowed to leave the examination room until half an hour has elapsed since the start of the examination.

 

Article 34

 

Any student caught cheating or attempting to cheat during an exam shall be deprived of all courses for the semester, in accordance with the legal provisions in force.

 

Article 35

 

Students have the right to request verification that there are no material errors in their course grades within a maximum of three days from the date of announcement of the results for that course. The verification is carried out by the examination board under the supervision of the dean of the faculty and the head of the department concerned. If a clerical error is found, the grade shall be changed by unanimous decision of those present.

 

Chapter 6: Miscellaneous provisions

 

Article 36

 

Practical and applied courses shall be taught in classes of no more than 20 students, in order to allow the professor to monitor and support his or her students.

 

Article 37

 

Students may be considered administratively enrolled in the third year of the LMD education system if they have obtained at least 36 credits out of the total credits for second-year courses. They may also be considered enrolled in the fourth year if they have obtained at least 96 credits. They are considered enrolled in the fifth year if they have obtained at least 156 credits.

 

Article 38

 

The study programs for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree and the professional master's degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy are defined in accordance with the attached tables and are modified upon the recommendation of the faculty council and with the approval of the university council.
