Article 1

 

The specialized PhD in dental medicine at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Lebanese University is awarded to candidates with a high scientific level, in recognition of innovative and outstanding scientific research in one of the specialties of dental medicine, and as proof of their mastery of scientific methodology in research, which enables the candidate to progress through the academic ranks in accordance with the rules in force and in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 4710 of January 28, 1994.

The PhD in Dental Medicine is awarded in collaboration and under the joint supervision of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Lebanese University and one of the faculties of dental medicine with which a cooperation and scientific exchange agreement has been concluded in this context (joint supervision of thesis).

 

Article 2

 

To obtain a PhD in Dental Medicine at the Lebanese University, candidates should meet the following requirements:

a) Hold a Lebanese baccalaureate, second cycle, or an officially recognized equivalent diploma.

b) Hold a degree in dental surgery from the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Lebanese University or an officially recognized equivalent degree.

c) Hold a postgraduate degree from the Lebanese University (of a minimum duration of two years) or an officially equivalent degree.

d) Hold the rank of senior clinical fellow at the Lebanese University, in accordance with the conditions set out in Decree No. 4710 of January 28, 1994, which adds paragraphs b) and c) to this article.

1- Publication of four scientific publications or equivalents.

2- Four years of university clinical teaching experience after obtaining the degree.

The candidate should also publish two original research papers in recognized dental journals before defending the thesis.

 

Article 3

 

Each candidate's application file should include the following documents:

1- A certificate attesting to the title of chair of the examination committee issued by the competent authority of the Lebanese University.

2- Equivalencies certified by the faculty's scientific jury if the candidate is from a university other than the Lebanese University.

3- An application form indicating the dissertation topic and accompanied by a general outline including a draft or summary of the dissertation containing the fundamental ideas behind the choice of topic, the general objectives of the research, a list of the main sources and references used, and an overview of the planned experimental research method.

4- A letter signed by the professor chosen as dissertation supervisor, indicating their agreement to supervise the research and approving the general outline of the topic, provided that the supervisor is a professor or meets the legal requirements for this grade.

5- The subject chosen by the candidate should be new and innovative. The dissertation may be on a clinical subject or on a subject related to the basic sciences of dental medicine, provided that it includes a section devoted to experimentation.

 

Article 4

 

The complete dissertation file shall be submitted to the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Dental Medicine for review and evaluation, which shall prepare a report on the subject. If the result is positive, the committee shall forward its recommendation to the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine for approval of enrollment, on the proposal of the two professors who participated in the dissertation.

 

Article 5

 

The examination board for the specialized PhD in dental medicine is composed of four or five members, all of whom hold the rank of professor or associate professor, or meet the legal requirements for these two ranks, and its chair is a full professor. These members should meet the following conditions:

- The first supervisor should be from the Faculty of Dental Medicine and hold the rank of professor or associate professor.

- There should be a second supervisor from a foreign university with which a scientific cooperation agreement has been concluded.

- Two of them should hold the rank of professor, including the chair of the committee.

- The other members of the committee should be at least assistant professors or meet the legal requirements for these two ranks.

- Two members of the committee should be from the Lebanese University, at least one of whom should be from the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

- One of the members of the committee may be from another medical specialty.

 

Article 6

 

A professor from a foreign university supervises, as co-supervisor, the dissertation in dental medicine, provided that there is a cooperation and scientific exchange agreement between that university and the Lebanese University.

The first supervisor is a professor at the Lebanese University - Faculty of Dental Medicine.

 

Article 7

 

The duration of the preparation and defense of the PhD dissertation specializing in dental medicine shall not be less than two years from the date of approval by the dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the registration of the dissertation topic. If the PhD candidate wishes to change the subject, they should submit a request, accompanied by the agreement of the supervising professor and the scientific jury, and the two-year period shall run from the date of approval of the change of subject by the dean.

 

Article 8

 

- At the end of their work, PhD candidates in dental medicine shall submit a written report to their dissertation supervisor in which they give their agreement to defend their dissertation, with the agreement of the second dissertation supervisor at the foreign university (joint supervision of the dissertation). The first dissertation supervisor shall also submit a proposal containing the names of the members of the examination board to the scientific committee, which shall have the right to accept or modify this proposal as it deems appropriate with regard to the composition of the board.

- The dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine - chair of the scientific board - shall appoint one of the members of the examination board to proofread the dissertation. If the dissertation receives two positive signatures, the dean approves its printing.

- The dean forwards the names of the members of the examination committee to the president of the Lebanese University in order to obtain the approval of the University Council on the composition of the committee and authorization to defend the dissertation.

 

Article 9

 

- The candidate for a PhD in dental medicine shall submit the required copies (four copies) to the faculty library and to each member of the examination jury fifteen days before the date announced for the defense.

- The dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine shall set the date and place of the defense.

- The defense is public and takes place within the premises of the Lebanese University.

 

Article 10

 

1- The jury awards the title of Doctor of Dental Medicine according to the following grades: very good – good.

2- In exceptional cases, the work may be mentioned unanimously by the examination committee and recommended for publication in the publications of the Lebanese University.

 

Article 11

 

This decision shall enter into force upon its publication and shall be communicated to the appropriate parties.
