Lecture on “Capital Punishment” at the ISS - Branch 2
The Institute of Social Sciences - Branch 2 organized a legal lecture entitled "Capital Punishment between Justice and Humanity", presented by Mr. Georges Rayes, an appeal lawyer at the Beirut Bar Association.
In his lecture, Mr. Rayes discussed the history of the death penalty from ancient times to its development in modern systems, explaining how the concept of justice has changed from revenge to reform, and then presented the position of Lebanese law on the death penalty.
The lecture also discussed the position of the state and society on the implementation of death sentences, presenting the arguments of supporters, which focus on deterrence and justice for the victims' families, and the arguments of opponents, which are based on human rights and the possibility of judicial error.
The lecture concluded with an interactive discussion with students, who shared their opinions and questions about the compatibility of the death penalty with modern and humanitarian values of justice.
