Born in Deir al-Qamar, 1904
Scientific Qualifications
- Studied at the School of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition and the Institute of the Marist Brothers - Deir El Qamar, then at the Jesuit School - Beirut.
- Studied law at the Faculty of Law at Saint Joseph University in Beirut.
- Honorary PhD in Literature from the French University of Lyon in 1957.
- Honorary PhD in Literature from St. Edward University in Austin - Texas, USA, in 1958.
- Honorary PhD in Law from Georgetown University in Washington, USA, in 1958.
Professional Career
- Contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese University in 1951 and was appointed President between 1953 and 1970.
- Founder of the Lebanese University Publications, which subsequently issued a large collection of books.
- Taught Arabic literature, Islamic civilization and contemporary Lebanese history in the Faculty of Pedagogy and the Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences at the Lebanese University since its establishment.
- Accomplished three encyclopedias that enriched the Lebanese and Arab libraries with literature and history, namely, "Circle of Knowledge", "Collection of Masterpieces" and "The Series of Lebanon History".
- Contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese Baccalaureate in 1929.
- Worked in the field of journalism and founded the Literature Science school newspaper in 1919 and was the editor-in-chief of Al-Mashreq magazine in 1927.
- Was a member of the Literary Association upon its establishment in 1928 and a member of Al Qalam Association and its first president in 1951, then became a member of the International Academy of Political Science, based in Geneva, and a member of the Association of German Orientalists.
- Joined the International Association of University Presidents in 1965, and the Deans of the Union of Universities in 1967.
- Launched the literary conversations at Radio Beirut upon its establishment in 1938.
Passed away in February 1994.
