The Lebanese University participates in the launch of WISEMED to combat water scarcity in agriculture

The Lebanese University, represented by its President, Dr. Bassam Badran, and the coordinator of the International Relations Committee, Dr. Véronique Kazpard, participated in the launch of the WISEMED initiative aimed at promoting sustainable water management and strengthening the agricultural sector's capacity to cope with water scarcity, during an official meeting held in Italy on 14 January 2026.

WISEMED, the MEDiterranean joint Water management and conservatIon SustainablE solutions project, brings together partners and institutions from across the Mediterranean region to promote sustainable solutions that strengthen the agricultural sector's capacity to cope with water scarcity and address one of the region's most pressing challenges, namely ”water scarcity in agriculture."

Funded by the European Union, the WISEMED project, which will run for 36 months until 2028, is led by the Italian Institute for University Cooperation (ICU) and aims to promote the adoption of integrated and sustainable water management measures in irrigated agriculture at the river basin level.

At the inaugural meeting, project partners from Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Spain, Italy, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey announced the launch of a Mediterranean cooperation network to exchange knowledge and experiences on experimental solutions and strengthen cooperation between research institutions, public authorities, and relevant local actors.

The WISEMED project aims to test and expand sustainable irrigation systems, improve water use efficiency, including the use of unconventional water sources, support evidence-based water policies, and strengthen local aquatic ecosystems by connecting service providers, institutions, and financial actors.
