Seminar on “Sustainable Energy Research” at the Faculty of Engineering - Branch 1 within SERMED
The Faculty of Engineering - Branch 1 hosted a seminar as part of the SERMED project (Sustainable Energy Research Outcomes around the Mediterranean) and Erasmus+ program.
The event brought together leading academics, industry experts, researchers and students to discuss pressing energy challenges and explore innovative pathways for sustainable development in Lebanon and across the Mediterranean region. The seminar was also supported by the Order of Engineers and Architects in Tripoli.
The seminar opened with a welcome address by Professor Nazih Moubayed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, who emphasized the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The first session focused on industry perspectives regarding Lebanon’s energy challenges and needs. Eng. Wael Zmerly, Founder and Managing Director of ZMERLY & CO, presented the Lebanese vision for energy sustainability, highlighting strategies to reduce electricity consumption (kWh) through solar energy solutions and smart heating systems.
Eng. Rustom Yamak, Founder and CEO of Tech Store Group, outlined the major challenges currently facing the country’s energy sector.
The second session showcased academic research contributions from the Lebanese University. Dr. Rabih Dib, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, presented his work on the integrated modelling and optimization of advanced energy systems to enhance performance, reliability, and sustainability.
Eng. Loubna Khaled, Researcher at the Faculty of Engineering, highlighted ongoing research initiatives aimed at developing sustainable agricultural energy systems with a global approach to improved thermal and energy management.
The seminar concluded with a roundtable discussion and an interactive question-and-answer session mainly how to reduce the gap between industries needs in Lebanon and research focus.
