“Rethinking the gendered division of domestic labor” at the ISS - Branch 1
At the invitation of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Lebanon and in collaboration with the Institute of Social Sciences - Branch 1 and the institute's research center, a scientific seminar was organized under the title “Rethinking the gender division of domestic work in light of the withdrawal of domestic workers”.
Drs. Hala Awada, Maryam Hasbani and Sanaa Kayyal presented a study on the need for working families to reconcile the demands of paid work with domestic responsibilities and to resort to different forms of assistance (relatives, day laborers and domestic workers at home), not forgetting the explosion of the financial economic crisis which has undermined previous arrangements between Lebanese women and their domestic substitutes.
The researchers reviewed the research methodology and sample, the interview topics and questionnaire, the difficulties of the research, the sociodemographic characteristics of the respondents, and the reasons for and impact of using paid domestic labor or not before and during the economic crisis.
A round table was then organized on the social and legal obstacles that prevent a fair renegotiation of domestic responsibilities between spouses, on how capitalist economies and neoliberal policies contribute to the division of domestic labor and reinforce traditional gender roles, and on how feminist discourse can move beyond the patriarchal concept of participation to achieve a real transformation of gender roles within families.
