Seminar on “Self-medication in the Central Bekaa” at the ISS - Branch 2

The Institute of Social Sciences – Branch 2, in collaboration with the Lebanese Sociological Association, organized an intellectual seminar on health anthropology entitled "Self-Medication in the Central Bekaa", in the presence of the Institute's Director, Dr. Therese Seif, the President of the Lebanese Sociological Association, Dr. Fida Bouhaidar, and a group of professors and students.

The seminar was moderated by Dr. Suzanne Menhem and opened with a speech by Dr. Seif, in which she praised the discipline of sociology, which enables students and professors to become socially active by approaching the phenomena of Lebanese society from a scientific perspective, leading them to overcome most of its crises.

The results showed that the reasons for self-medication are mostly due to social beliefs that have shaped the “habitus” that explains the behavior of the individuals in the sample, and to pharmacists who give medicines and medical advice without consulting a doctor. In addition, the availability of medicines in the Lebanese market from various local and foreign sources makes it easy for those who want to self-medicate to do so without significant difficulty.
