The Lebanese University wins two gold and one bronze medals at “BIIS-2021”
The Lebanese University won two gold and one bronze medals at the Beirut International Invention Fair 2021 (BIIS-2021), organized online on 10 April 2021, by the National Sciences and Research Authority, in cooperation with the International Federation of Inventors' Associations (IFIA) and a number of international partners.
The patented project "New Onion Biocement for Dental Application", ranked first winning a gold medal under the leadership of Dr. Akram Hijazi, lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Dr. Paul Nahas, lecturer at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Dr. Mahmoud Kattan, graduate of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Dr. Mohamad Medlej, graduate of the Faculty of Science.
The team demonstrated that the substance discovered penetrates deep into the dental canals to a depth of 10 microns and at a pressure approaching 5 MPa. They are looking to develop this substance for surgical purposes in the fields of orthodontics and orthopedics.
Similarly, Dr. Akram Hijazi and Dr. Mustafa Hamieh from the Doctoral School of Science & Technology won a gold medal for their project: "Synthesis of new polyurethane filters doped with activated carbon based on banana tree stems to quench sea water".
The bronze medal was awarded to student Ninette Kamel from the Doctoral School of Literature, Humanities & Social Sciences for the MiSci application, which allows students to acquire scientific knowledge through various activities based on the theory of multiple intelligences.
