Researchers from the Lebanese University present a new study related to Streptococcus pyogenes and its risk

The British scientific journal “Future Microbiology” published a new study that was co-prepared by a group of researchers in the Laboratory of Microbiology of Health and Environment of the Doctoral School of Science & Technology and the Faculty of Public Health at the Lebanese University, relating to Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, entitled: “Molecular epidemiology of nonpharyngeal group A Streptococci isolates in northern Lebanon”.

The study forms part of the master's thesis prepared by student Malak Hawli, specialized in Infectious Diseases, under the supervision of Dr. Rayan Rafihi and a number of researchers in the Laboratory of Microbiology of Health and Environment in cooperation with Dr. Sima Tokagian and Professor Tamara Salloum from the Lebanese American University (LAU) and Dr. Simone Khalisa from the University of Lille, France.

The importance of the study is that it shed light on the bacteria that cause several types of infections, such as tonsillitis, especially in children, skin infections, rheumatic fever, and glomerulonephritis.

The study classified the epidemiology of these isolated bacteria in non-pharyngeal infections (skin ulcers, ear and blood infections), and showed the risk of these infections in terms of their possession and excretion of high-impact antigenic compounds or what is known as “Superantigens”. The study also showed that the vaccine under examination against this bacterium (30 - valent) provides 76% coverage for the types responsible for non-pharyngeal infections.
