Scientific Qualifications

  • PhD in Geographical Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences at the Free University of Brussels - Belgium in 1975;
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Geography from the Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences at the Lebanese University in 1971;
  • Bachelor in Geography from the Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences at the Lebanese University in 1969;

Professional Career

  • Lecturer at the Lebanese University in 1975 and Professor in 1982;
  • Co-established the Faculty of Tourism & Hospitality Management at the Lebanese University and Dean between 1997 and 2002;
  • Dean of the Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences at the Lebanese University between 2008 and 2009;
  • Member of the Board of Directors of the National Council for Scientific Research since 1993;
  • Expert Coordinator in the Permanent Population Committee between 1997 and 1999, and Member of the Expert Committee since 1999;
  • Expert and consultant for urban studies, migration, population and development with several Arab and international bodies, including the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the UN Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS - Habitat), the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP);
  • Member of the editorial board of the Atlas of the Arab Nation Foundation - Association of Arab Universities, and participant in the Association work between Tunisia, Libya, Kuwait, Iraq and Jordan;
  • Member of the Commission on Population Geography of the International Geographical Union;
  • Researcher with the Middle East Research (MER) at the University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, and supervisor of field studies in Greece and Cyprus on Lebanese immigration;
  • Director of the Geographical Foundation House established in 1990, and President of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD);
  • Author of many books and researches on geography, migration and population and representative of Lebanon in a number of international summits and conferences.
