Chapter I: General Provisions: Center Goals and Mission
Article 1
The Center works to achieve the following objectives:
1. Graduate cadres capable of managing the restoration and rehabilitation of historical sites and monuments.
2. Provide expertise and consultations to the authorities concerned with the preservation of historical sites and monuments.
3. Provide integrated studies on matters related to the restoration and rehabilitation of historical sites.
4. Raise awareness of the importance of urban heritage by organizing seminars and issuing related publications.
Chapter II: Center Structure
Article 2
The Center reports directly to the Deanship of the Institute of Fine Arts.
Article 3
The Center's structure consists of:
a. Presidency
b. Scientific Committee
c. Administrative Unit
Article 4
The Head of the Center is appointed by the President of the University upon the proposal of the Institute Council for a renewable two-year term. He heads all committees in the Center.
Article 5
The Dean shall form a scientific committee composed of the specialized professors coordinating the various subjects (note that each subject has several professors to teach it according to their specific specialization) from among the members of the teaching staff and upon the proposal of the Head of the Center:
Coordinator of the History of Architecture
Coordinator of Restoration History and Theory
Coordinator of the following three subjects:
1. Vision and approach to the building and its surroundings.
2. Preservation, restoration and reuse of the building.
3. Natural surroundings.
Coordinator of the archaeological site course
Coordinator of:
1- Historic city.
2- Administrative aspect of architectural heritage.
Their members should be experienced and specialized in the subjects they are coordinating and should be involved in teaching them for a period of two years.
The tasks of the Scientific Committee are defined as follows:
a. Supervise the application of curricula and programs and ensure the quality of education.
b. Recommend the modification of curricula and programs and ways and means of evaluation.
c. Evaluate the technical expertise of candidates for contracting with the Center.
Article 6
Administrative, documentation, clerical and custodial work shall be provided by employees designated by the Dean from among the Institute's employees (if possible) after consulting the Head of the Center. The work is distributed among them by a memorandum issued by the Head of the Center.
Chapter III: Degree
Article 7
This Center prepares architecture degree holders for the DESS (Diploma of Advanced Studies Specialized in Restoration and Preservation of Historic Monuments and Sites).
Chapter IV: Student Affiliation
Article 8
In order for students to be admitted to the first year of the Postgraduate Diploma in Restoration and Preservation of Historic Monuments and Sites, the following is required:
1. Possess a degree in architecture that entitles the holder to join the Order of Architects in his/her country.
2. Pass an eligibility test organized by the Center for this purpose based on the decision of the University Council after the recommendation of the Dean, which includes:
- Submit a resume and a personal file that includes certificates and experiences to be evaluated by the committee, in addition to a letter indicating the person's interest in joining the Center.
- Take a test in quick sketching of some historical architectural elements.
- Conduct a personal interview with the examination committee.
Article 9
The examining committee for this test shall be formed by a decision of the University Council based on the proposal of the Institute Council.
Article 10
1. The maximum number of students who can be admitted shall be determined by a decision of the University Council based on the proposal of the Institute Council.
2. Of this number, students who have successfully passed the above-mentioned test shall be accepted.
Chapter V: Teaching and Examination System
Article 11
The duration of study for the Postgraduate Diploma in Restoration and Preservation of Historic Monuments and Sites is limited to two academic years.
Article 12
The Center accepts students once every two years, beginning a two-year cycle.
Article 13
The courses of study for the Center for Specialized Graduate Studies in Restoration and Preservation of Historic Monuments and Sites are outlined in the attached table.
Article 14
The teaching of the subjects prescribed in the attached curriculum is organized over two full academic years in partial study periods (three days every two weeks) in order to allow students to practice their professional work in addition to their academic studies.
Article 15
The Center sets other days in addition to the aforementioned teaching days to visit archaeological and historical sites. This is in order to organize the field training work.
Article 16
The curricula at the Center include:
1. Theoretical subjects
2. Theoretical and practical subjects together
3. Field visits for all subjects.
Article 17
The Lebanese University can enter into cooperation agreements with other local or international universities and institutes to exchange professors and students and expand field visits.
Article 18
Lectures are organized outside study times by specialists at the invitation of the Head of the Center whenever the need arises.
Article 19
The Center organizes international conferences on various topics related to the specialty in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
Article 20
Attending all lectures, practical exercises and civil visits is mandatory, provided that the student's absence does not exceed 20% of the number of hours scheduled for the academic year and should be justified by a legitimate excuse or the student will not be deprived of the final exams for the academic year.
Article 21
The study subjects are evaluated by written and oral exams, exercises and applied projects during and at the end of the year, the number of which is determined by the dean based on the proposal of the Head of the Center and the Scientific Committee.
The student is promoted from the first year to the second year after obtaining the average in all subjects (10/20). If he fails in one or at most two subjects, he has the right to retake them in a subsequent course, the date of which is determined by a decision of the dean.
At the end of the second academic year, students take oral exams and evaluate the work and projects of the two academic years together, and the examining committee formed by a decision of the University Council based on the recommendation of the Dean based on the proposal of the Head of the Center decides to grant the student a diploma of specialization. One of the conditions for success is the possession of an average (10/20) in all subjects without exception. In case of failure in one or at most two subjects, the student has the right to wait until the next session (i.e. after two years) to pursue this subject (or these two subjects) and do all related tests, exercises and projects (or both). The student does not receive a diploma until he/she passes this subject (or these two subjects).
Chapter VI: Teaching Staff
Article 22
Due to the specificity of the center and the various specializations it requires, the teaching staff consists of professors who, in addition to a university degree, hold a certificate of specialization in the subjects assigned to them. The duration of the study of this degree should not be less than two academic years and educational and/or practical experience (according to the specialty) not less than four years after obtaining this degree.
Article 23
The Lebanese University can contract with experts who have extensive experience in restoration of various types, provided that they have not less than ten years of experience and preferably have their own publications in this field, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
This experience is evaluated by the scientific committee of the Center.
Chapter VII: Final Provisions
Article 24
The curricula for the two academic years of the Center shall be amended, and the evaluation system shall be amended by a decision of the University Council based on the proposal of the Institute Council based on the recommendation of the Scientific Committee of the Center.
