“LU-Environment” team ranks first in “DAWERR Ideathon” competition for solid waste management
The team of the Faculties of Science and Agronomy “LU-Environment Team” ranked first in the first challenge of “DAWERR Ideathon” organized by Berytech virtually over five consecutive days with funding from the US Agency for Development (USAID).
“DAWERR Ideathon” provides opportunity for young entrepreneurs and startups to present innovative solutions that contribute to solid waste management and the development of green solutions in their social environments.
Out of the 300 applications submitted to the competition, 9 teams were named to present their projects and ideas before a specialized jury. The Lebanese University team won the first place after proposing a project based on converting organic waste into biochar for farmers to benefit from as fertilizer for soil at a low cost.
The team consists of professors Akram Hijazi, May Issa and Bishr Sukkarieh and students Ghinwa Kataya, Joumana Mansour and Batoul Wehbi.
It is noteworthy that “DAWERR” is a five-year project that aims to improve the social, environmental and economic level of Lebanese citizens by providing sustainable solutions for household solid waste by diverting it and increasing its value in cooperation with municipalities in rural areas.
