Study of student Hiba Al-Mir published in “Frontiers in Microbiology”

The International Scientific Journal “Frontiers in Microbiology” published the second part of the results of the study conducted by student Hiba Al-Mir on bacteria resistant to antibiotics, entitled: “WGS Analysis of Clonal and Plasmidic Epidemiology of Colistin-Resistance Mediated by mcr Genes in the Poultry Sector in Lebanon”.

This study was conducted in cooperation with Wilco Poultry and Meat Company (WilcoPM), which assisted in obtaining samples from 32 chicken farms in North Lebanon.

The importance of the study is its reliance on “next-generation sequencing”, which showed that 85% of farms contain bacteria resistant to colistin - an antibiotic that is considered one of the last drug weapons for treating antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Hiba carried out her research experiments in the Laboratory of Microbiology of Health and the Environment of the Faculty of Public Health and the Doctoral School of Science & Technology at the Lebanese University, and the Antibiotic Resistance Unit at the French University of Lyon (Anses).
