The Center for Languages & Translation (CLT) at the Lebanese University and the University of Lorraine co-organized the international colloquium "Prudence/imprudence - Production and translation of formal, political and legal texts", which was held in Nancy, France, on 18-19 November 2021.

Over a period of two days, the colloquium focused on several issues dealing with different lexical, cultural, conceptual and didactic axes.

During the colloquium, Prof. Hoda Moukannas, Dr. Layal Merhi, Dr. Gaby Chahine, and doctoral student Jad El Hage, from the Lebanese University, gave lectures on the production and translation of formal, political and legal texts.

In her presentation, Prof. Hoda Moukannas focused on the concepts of Prudence and imprudence in translation and the difference between ordinary errors and mistakes, while Dr. Layal Merhi and Dr. Gaby Chahine discussed the terms used in the translation of legal concepts and their differences between one Arab country and another.

Doctoral student Jad El Hage focused his presentation on the political and religious discourse of the Islamic State "Daech" which does not translate certain religious concepts, despite the presence of an equivalent in the target language.

The colloquium concluded with a series of recommendations that reiterate the importance of unifying legal terminology and creating terms that fill the void in Arab legal codes, especially in emerging legal and economic matters.

Note: The proceedings of the conference will be published later.
