The Lebanese University participates in the cleaning campaign of Lake Qaraoun

Teams from the Lebanese University have been participating for several days in the campaign to clean up Lake Qaraoun where thousands of fishes have washed up on its surface. This operation is taking place in cooperation with the Litani River Authority, the Lebanese Army, the Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) and a group of volunteers from private universities and civil associations.

The UL Crisis Intervention Unit (LUTF) formed under the supervision of President Fouad Ayoub, an emergency team within the National Center for the Quality of Medicine, Food, Water and Chemicals to support the field teams concerned with food safety, fisheries, waste treatment, and epidemics, in cooperation with the LRC.

In order to publish scientific recommendations to deal with this ecological disaster, a specialized scientific team was formed to:

  • Determine the direct and indirect causes of the disaster by the laboratories;
  • Remove dead fish;
  • Establish a context for scientific treatment of dead fish that is not harmful to the environment and groundwater, and that primarily preserves health safety of the residents of the towns surrounding the lake;
  • Periodically monitor the water oxygen level fluctuations during the day and the night to preserve the lake ecosystem;
  • Fight the sources of pollution of the Litani River and Lake Qaraoun;
  • Conduct an epidemiological study of the residents of the communities surrounding the lake;
  • Carry out treatment works of the irrigation water of the lake via Canal 900.
